Preparing For Coronavirus (COVID-19)

We're here for you

Remain up-to-date on the pandemic

  • Overview

    We're Here For You

As the impact of COVID-19 is felt across the globe, we’d like to assure you that the University of Hawai`i Federal Credit Union (UHFCU) continues to operate and is here to serve your financial needs. During this rapidly evolving situation, our main priority is the health, safety, and well-being of our staff and member-owners.

Who said you can’t social distance and have fun too? Our staff came together to do a social “dis-dance” mannequin challenge to show that despite a challenging environment, UHFCU is still here for you. We hope you enjoy the video as much as we did making it! Enjoy 🙂

    • *ALERT: Contact Tracing Scams*

COVID-19 contact tracing is an important step to slow the spread of COVID-19. Health officials need to notify and collect information from people who have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. However, scammers are using this effort as an opportunity to pose as contact tracers and steal your personal information.

Click here to learn the facts about contact tracing, and ways you can prevent your personal information from being stolen.

    • *Help Support AUW*

Aloha United Way’s Hawaii COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund was activated to raise and deploy flexible resources quickly to local nonprofit agencies supporting those affected by the coronavirus outbreak. UHFCU is proud to be Hawaii’s first credit union to support AUW’s efforts during this time of crisis. If you are able to, we encourage you to donate online to help ensure we meet the critical human services for our most vulnerable in Hawaii in this time of crisis.

Also, as a vital part of the Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) emergency response plan, Aloha United Way 211 is the primary community call-to-action for info on COVID-19. Contact the Aloha United Way call center by calling 2-1-1. Staff are available to take your call from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

    • *Chlorinated Disinfecting Tablets*

We have begun utilizing Green Klean’s Chlorinated Disinfecting Tablets, an EPA-registered sanitizer, to disinfect our branches. These advanced tablets are proven to provide broad-spectrum coverage from COVID-19 (eliminated within one minute of contact) and 40+ other pathogens. Interestingly, despite how powerful the tablets are, they are gentle and safe enough to use as a food-grade sanitizer.

    • *Hydroxyl-Generating Air Cleaners*

We’ve installed social distance markers, plexiglass shields, new sanitization procedures, face masks, and 4-stage air cleaning systems featuring True HEPA filters and Plasmawave® technology as part of our exceptional efforts to protect and safeguard our members and employees throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, we’ve raised the bar even higher (literally “higher”) by employing the same air-cleansing mechanisms used by NASA to clean the space station – Hydroxyl Generators.

Hydroxyls, which were first discovered by scientists in 1963, are naturally occurring “detergents” of the troposphere (the lowest part of the atmosphere) because they react with many pollutants and help to destroy them. Hydroxyls also have an essential role in eliminating some greenhouse gases like methane and ozone. Hydroxyl generators have been certified by the FDA. They are often used in hospitals, including neonatal and baby wards, as a means to kill/inactivate bacteria, viruses, and mold while being entirely safe to people, pets, plants, and materials.

As always, we encourage you to use “safe banking” measures; however, the next time you visit our McCully Branch, rest easy knowing you’re breathing very clean “space-age” air.

    • *Stimulus Funds*

Stimulus payments will be directly deposited to the account the IRS has on file for a household – which is the same account from your last tax return. If there is no account on file, the IRS will send a check to your home address. If you receive a check by mail, it can be safely deposited to your UHFCU account using the “Mobile Deposit” option on our Mobile Banking app.

We encourage you to review the FAQs provided by the IRS as well as to calculate the amount you should receive from the government. Also, we encourage you to set up Online Banking alerts, so you know when the funds are deposited.

    • *ALERT: Phone Scam*

      *Phone Scam Alert*

Fraudsters are taking advantage of the pandemic situation by targeting Debit Cards—tricking consumers into sharing confidential information. A phone scam is increasingly being reported around the country and locally. The goal of the scam is to dig for the details that will enable them to make large withdrawals from your checking account.

Click here to learn more about the tactics they’re using as well as tips on how to identify red flags. We’d also like to re-emphasize that UHFCU will NEVER initiate contact with you by phone, e-mail, text, or through social media outlets to ask for your personal or financial information. Also, we highly encourage you to set up account alerts using Online Banking.

    • *Shared Branching Update*

      *Shared Branching Update*

Many other credit unions have decided to either stop accepting Shared Branch transactions or accept them only at certain locations. Please visit the click here for the latest on available Shared Branching locations.

    UHFCU COVID-19 Resources

    • How to Bank Safe

      Practice safe banking

Our branches, operational support teams, and remote channels remain open to serve you without interruption. However, for the health and safety of our members and employees, if you or anyone in your household is feeling ill, please avoid visiting a branch location. Instead, we encourage you to use self-service and non-contact options to fulfill your banking needs.

      • Use UHFCU’s Online and Mobile Banking services to check balances, pay bills online, make payments, transfer funds, or deposit checks. Trouble accessing? Please call us at (808) 983-5500. See below for more information.
      • Rather than branches, visit any of the 375+ surcharge-free ATMs (both First Hawaiian Bank and American Savings Bank) available throughout the islands to withdraw cash. Remember to sanitize your hands afterward.
      • Utilize our digital methods to sign your UHFCU paperwork (example: loan documents) in just a few minutes online.
      • If you must visit retailers, use contactless mobile phone payments with your UHFCU debit and credit card. We support Apple, Google, and Samsung Pay services.
    • Steps We Are Taking

      Steps we are taking

Please rest assured that we have taken the necessary steps to serve you safely and securely. In addition to meeting your in-branch, online, and mobile banking needs, UHFCU is well prepared to help you without interruption in service. We’re also continually researching and enhancing our safety protocols. We recently implemented concierge service, strong cleaning protocols, and social distancing guidelines at our branches. We’re now in the final stages of completing the following additional steps to provide even safer branch environments:

      • We’ve installed plexiglass sneeze guards and barriers at the teller lines and offices to protect those who service you.
      • As the CDC and local officials have recommended, our branch staff will wear protective face masks while serving you. We ask that you do the same, if you must visit a branch.
      • We’ve installed Hydroxyl-generating air cleaners above our lobby, the same air-cleansing mechanisms used by NASA to clean the space station.
      • We have begun utilizing Green Klean’s Chlorinated Disinfecting Tablets, an EPA-registered sanitizer, to disinfect our branches.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and evaluate additional measures to support our members and community as needs arise. Please continue to check your e-mails from us and visit UHFCU.com for regular updates and to submit your questions online.

    • Be Aware of Scammers

      Be aware of scammers

Please also be on the alert for scammers, who are looking to take advantage of the situation. Some of them are impersonating health officials or making donation requests to fund emergency funds. Do not open unfamiliar e-mails or click the links within these messages. The FTC has information available on How to Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams and Coronavirus scams – what the FTC is doing.
