Travel Do’s and Don’ts You’ll Actually Use

  • Overview

    Travel Do’s and Don’ts You’ll Actually Use

Summer is calling—and so are your travel plans! Whether you’re planning a quick getaway or the trip of a lifetime, staying financially smart can make all the difference. Check out these travel Do’s and Don’ts to help you vacation with confidence.

    Do’s:

    • Plan a budget: Create a detailed budget before your trip, including flights, accommodation, food, activities, and transportation. This helps you track spending and avoid overspending.
    • Notify your bank and credit card company: Inform them of your travel dates and destinations to prevent unnecessary fraud alerts and account freezes.
    • Use secure payment methods: Prioritize secure payment methods like credit cards or travel cards when making purchases abroad. Travelling internationally? Consider a credit card with no foreign transaction fee.
    • Carry a reasonable amount of cash: Keep enough cash on hand for small purchases, but avoid carrying large amounts to minimize the risk of theft.
    • Make copies of important documents: Scan or keep copies of your passport, visa, travel insurance, and other essential documents.
    • Be aware of exchange rates: Research the current exchange rates to get the best possible exchange rate for your currency.
    • Consider travel insurance: Protect yourself from unexpected medical expenses, cancellations, and lost luggage with travel insurance.
    • Monitor your accounts regularly: Keep an eye on your bank and credit card statements to catch any suspicious activity.
    • Pack light: Reduce the amount of luggage you have to carry, which can also help save on baggage fees.
    • Take advantage of travel rewards: Look for and utilize travel rewards programs offered by credit cards and airlines.
    • Consider a fake wallet: Carry a fake wallet with a small amount of cash and an empty credit card to distract potential pickpockets.

    Don’ts:

    • Don’t use public Wi-Fi for financial transactions: Public Wi-Fi networks are not secure and can be hacked, potentially exposing your financial information.
    • Don’t overspend on souvenirs: Set a budget for souvenirs and stick to it to avoid overspending.
    • Don’t forget to tip appropriately: Research local tipping customs and tip accordingly.
    • Don’t leave your valuables unattended: Be mindful of your belongings and never leave them unattended.
    • Don’t be afraid to ask for help: If you get lost or have trouble finding a place, don’t be afraid to ask for help from locals or tourist information centers.
